Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Criteria

Clophill Archery Club is often approached by young people wanting to participate in archery to achieve the Physical Recreation Section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the club are very happy to help and very much support the aims of the scheme.

Archery is a fantastic sport but it is important to remember that it does require a high level of commitment to improve your skills, accuracy and also to develop the physical strength required for the sport.

Clophill Archery Club has now taken the step to develop a formal criterion to match the aims and principles of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to ensure that their requirements are met and those taking part get as much out of it as possible.

What will you need to do?

  • Complete a beginners course –A beginners course is a must do for anyone wanting to join an archery club that is not experienced in the sport whether they are a senior or junior. The beginner’s course takes place over three, two hour sessions and will teach you how to take part in the sport, follow the basic rules and most importantly to shoot safely.  It is also a requirement of our governing body and helps us comply with our insurers. The cost of the beginner’s course including instruction and use of equipment is £30.00.
  • You will need to become a member of the club (junior membership fee see about us ). Membership fees cover the use of facilities for the year, your membership of Clophill Archery Club and GNAS (Grand National Archery Society our governing body).
  • You will need to attend  the “know your equipment session.” The purpose of this single session is to help you identify the different parts of the bow and ensure that it is safe and well maintained.
  • You will need to attend the club meetings at least once a week. This will provide you with the time to practice and the opportunity to meet other club members (we meet at least twice weekly).
  • You will also need to take part and submit scores in each of the monthly postal competitions. These are held at the club site no entry fee is required.  This will help you demonstrate you new found ability and show improvements to your scores. Timescales will obviously depend of the level of award that you are aiming for.
  • Please remember that a guardian or parent must be in attendance with you at all times.  This is a requirement of all junior members (those under the age of 18) at Clophill Archery Club.

Archery is a sport that can be taken to whatever level you want; be it purely a leisure activity or to compete at the highest levels.  It is worth remembering that many Colleges and Universities have their own archery clubs so this is a great way of getting to meet new people and to take your new found skill further….
